Why do you want to work for our school district?
If you are asked this question in a job interview for a teaching position: What are some things you should avoid when responding to this question? What might be some important points to stress that would get the interviewer’s attention? How would you respond to this question?

Before interview it is a good idea to know the beliefs of the school district. Knowing their mission statement, and possibly quoting it and commenting on what that means to you could be a good idea. Researching the school specifically and their beliefs may be beneficial as well.

I would not tell the interviewer that I want to work in the school district simply because I live in the district and it is convenient. Depending on the district, I would stress that I think the district is well established and respected, or it is a promising, up and coming district that I want to be a part of. I would only make positive statements, and keep my personal disagreements with the district, if any, to myself. I do not see this as lying. I could not, by myself, change the entire district and its policies, so nitpicking will not get me anywhere if I want a job.

I disagree with part of the post. I would mention that I live in the county because that makes it personal. I want to work for the county because it is my home and would want to do everything I can to assist in our county and students prospering.

In order to accurately answer this question, the interviewer should familiarize their self with the system and school. While you should know the mission statement and teaching philosophy of the system and school, you should educate your self as much as possible. Dive into the demographics of the system and school. Learn as much as you can about administration and other staff members. Be aware of what educational programs are offered and projects that are being developed. It is important that you establish an emotional connection to these and share common interests. In doing this, it assures both you and the interviewer that the two of you are professionally compatible.
