How would you identify the special needs of your students?
If you are asked this question in a job interview for a teaching position: What are some things you should avoid when responding to this question? What might be some important points to stress that would get the interviewer’s attention? How would you respond to this question?

This question to me would mean students with disabilities and the Individuals with Disabilities ACT (IDEA). When indentifying the special needs of students this entails knowing and understanding all the students in my classroom who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 plan. As a general education teacher, I under law am required to comply with an IEP or 504 plan and must implement such accommodations outlined in my classroom.

When answering questions regarding special needs of students it is important to use politically correct terminology. As a former special education teacher, the Individualized Education Plan or 504 plan only provides the eligibility of the student and suggested student supports. In order to gain a more accurate perspective of what instructional accommodations best fit the student, the teacher should review the case file, taking a specific look at the psychological evaluation. This will provide greater insight into cognitive and behavior functionality/ability. Additionally, the teacher must get to know the student and establish rapport in order to interact with students and gain their feedback regarding any accommodations that are being made.
