DBQ Assessment
Mr. Smith is required by his county to implement a summative assessment that is DBQ based. DBQ stands for document based questions that student must complete in order to write a paper. Students are given primary and secondary sources that they are to analyze and and create a thesis to a question. The paper will be graded by a rubric and will count as a unit test. However, Mr. Smith feels that this approach will not provide students enough content to be successful on the End of Course Test. How should he incorporate more content in the DBQ so the students are more prepared for the EOCT? Time is of the essence.

DBQ have a large amount of information associated with each question. If Mr. Smith feels the questions he gives lack enough information, he can add to the question more information. A great place to find DBQ is from the Regents Tests of New York State. NY Regents has released about 20 past years DBQ from all subjects in high school settings. These are great practice resources for students.

Mr. Smith could expand the prompt to take it up to a higher level of Depth of Knowledge or Bloom's. He could also add in another source in the form of a visual aid that the student must incorporate. The visual aid is often much more difficult for students to integrate into a DBQ.

Mr. Smith could create nested questions dealing with the topic. By providing a both selected and constructed response questions dealing with the document Mr. Smith can better assess that the students have learned the material. This is also how the Georgia Milestones EOC questions will be formatted.

Mr. Smith could scaffold the activity to provide guiding questions for students that need help with this assessment strategy to help all students. Also he could have students develop a outline of the essay to help them start to develop the writing skills needed to complete the DBQ assessment.
