Dealing with chatty co workers
The vine within the school grows quickly. This simply means gossip travels quickly. When at school I have found a friend or two that I can completely trust and can share my secrets, but when it comes to all the other co workers, I keep to myself. This is because I like to keep my privacy private and do not need gossip about me to spread.

This is good that you have someone you can confide in, but I will still be cautious of what you tell that friend. You never know in the future what that person might said.

I agree that gossip travels very quickly within a school. I have found that the best rule of thumb is to not say anything you would be embarrassed or unhappy if someone else heard. A close friend within the school is a great thing to have, but just make sure you are still conscious of the fact that you are in a work setting.

One of the best pieces of advice I received during my student teaching was to never eat lunch in the teacher's lounge. My mentor explained that the teacher's lounge is where people get wrapped up in the gossip of the school, complain about the happenings of the school, and lose focus on the big picture. I have been teaching for 3 years now, and I have never eaten in the lounge. I try to stay away from the drama and keep my students' needs in the forefront of everything at school!

I have always said that I do not like working with women. I am a woman so I feel I can say that. The truth is though women are not the only chatty people in the workplace. I feel like schools can be a rumor mill full of cattiness and viscous words. I choose to stay away from gossip. I choose to not engage. I will stay shut in my room or in my pod if it means I can stay from the talk going on around the office and other areas. It is just not worth it to me. I like my coworkers and I do not want to be engaged in any type of negative behavior. I choose to do my job and nothing else.

I was also given advice to stay out of the teacher's lounge. I have found that for me, it is impossible to even go in there except for bathroom breaks. There never really is anytime for gossip in my work experience.

It is definitely hard for gossip to not be spread because everyone is bound to talk but just try and keep work life separate from personal life.
