Background

The Revolutionary War took place between the American colonists and the country of England, who were controlling the American colonies.  The American colonists revolted against British rule and eventually started a war to gain their freedom from England.  This war for independence is known as the Revolutionary War, but what happened that led up to this war?  What events led to a revolution?

It started after the French and Indian War.  England had assisted the colonies in this war and, as a result of their involvement, England had spent a lot of money.  In an attempt to replenish (refill) the depleted (empty) British treasury, King George began to tax American colonists. The British Parliament passed laws such as the Sugar Act and Stamp Act to ea extra money from the colonists.  The Tea Act was passed to benefit the East India Company and hurt colonial merchants.  Colonists disliked these laws because they did not get a say in them.  They were angry about “taxation without representation.”

As a protest against the Tea Act, the colonists dressed as Native Americans and threw boxes of tea off of a ship docked in the Boston Harbor.  This event became known as the Boston Tea Party.  The Boston Tea Party angered the British Govement and led them to pass the Intolerable Acts in 1774.  For the next year, colonists protested and tried to fight the Intolerable Acts, but failed to get the laws removed.  England had no intention to give into the colonists demands and, instead, sent more troops to the colonies and use force to restore their authority.  This action backfired as it infuriated the colonists and led to the start of the Revolutionary War.
