Lesson Description: The goal of this lesson is for the students will be able to use coins to count up to a dollar. The students will also be able to understand how much a penny, nickel, dime and quarter are worth and how many are needed to make a dollar.

  • MA.1.M.2.2 Identify pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, and express their values using the ¢ symbol. State how many of each coin equal a dollar.
  • MA.1.M.2.3 Find the value of combinations of pennies, nickels and dimes up to one dollar, and the value of combinations of one, five and ten dollar bills up to $100. Use the ¢ and $ symbols appropriately.

Here are some common combinations of ways to make a US dollar by making a total of 100 cents.

- A dollar is worth 100 cents and each dollar bills is the same value as 100 penny coins.

- Each dime is worth 10 cents, so ten dimes make one dollar because 10x10 = 100 cents.

- Each nickel is worth 5 cents, so twenty nickels make one dollar because 20x5 = 100 cents.

- Each quarter is worth 25 cents, so four quarters make one dollar because 4x25 = 100 cents.
