Lesson Description: In this lesson students will investigate colonial self-government by using teacher provided sources. They will compare and contrast the English colonial settlements of Jamestown and Plymouth. They will gather data and create a Venn Diagram. They will practice by creating a short story from the viewpoint of a settler in either English colony with the use of at least 10 key terms taken from the lesson resources. They will finish by practicing SSUSH 2 Vocabulary Terms for their quiz during the week of the lesson.

Description: The Mayflower anchored in the large natural harbor of Provincetown much further north than their intended destination, Virginia, although the area had already been explored by Europeans. Since they did not have a patent to settle here, yet had run out of provisions, the Pilgrims wrote the Mayflower Compact that served as a governing charter for the new colony and began to prepare exploratory parties. On 21 December the first landing party stepped ashore at Plymouth, which had been named by John Smith six years earlier. The first winter was harsh and, by March, over half the settlers had died. However, the next few months saw the colony sign a peace treaty with the leader of the local Wampanoag people, who went on to share their knowledge of the local environment to help the Pilgrims begin to build a successful and self-sufficient colony.

Description: After years of unsuccessful settlements, the English founded the colony of Jamestown in Virginia. It became successful partially because of the binding agreement, The Jamestown Charter, and decisions that were periodically made by their self-governing House of Burgesses.

Description: The English Colony of Jamestown would not have survived colonial conditions if it were not for the leadership that John Smith demanded. He stepped up as a leader at a low point of their progress. They were growing hungry, feeling defeated, and they needed governmental structure as well as law and order to survive.
