Organization and Development of Living Organisms
...
Subject Area: Science | Grade Level: 5
Lesson Length: 30 minutes
Keywords/Tags: Body
Lesson Description: In this lesson, students will investigate the Organization and Development of Living Organisms.

  • SC.5.L.14.1 Identify the organs in the human body and describe their functions, including the skin, brain, heart, lungs, stomach, liver, intestines, pancreas, muscles and skeleton, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder, and sensory organs.
  • SC.5.L.14.2 Compare and contrast the function of organs and other physical structures of plants and animals, including humans, for example: some animals have skeletons for support -- some with internal skeletons others with exoskeletons -- while some plants have stems for support.

Our bodies have different parts that work together to keep us alive and healthy. These parts are called organ systems, and each one has a special job.

1. Skeletal System (Bones)
The skeletal system is made up of bones. It gives our body shape and support. Bones also protect important organs, like the skull protecting the brain. There are 206 bones in an adult human body.

2. Muscular System (Muscles)
The muscular system helps us move. There are over 600 muscles in our body. Some muscles, like the ones in our arms and legs, move when we want them to. Others, like the heart, work on their own.

3. Digestive System (Food Breakdown)
This system helps tu food into energy. Important organs include the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The stomach breaks down food, and the intestines absorb nutrients. The waste leaves the body when we go to the bathroom.

4. Respiratory System (Breathing)
This system helps us breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. The lungs are the main organ. The nose, trachea (windpipe), and diaphragm help too. We breathe about 20,000 times a day.

5. Circulatory System (Heart and Blood)
The heart pumps blood through our body. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body. The arteries take blood away from the heart, and the veins bring it back.

6. Nervous System (Brain and Nerves)
The brain controls everything we do. The spinal cord and nerves send messages between the brain and body. It helps us think, feel, and move.

7. Excretory System (Removing Waste)
This system gets rid of waste from our body. The kidneys filter our blood and make urine. The bladder stores urine before we go to the bathroom.

8. Endocrine System (Hormones)
This system controls growth, energy, and emotions. It uses hormones, which are special chemicals. The thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands help keep our body balanced.

9. Immune System (Fighting Germs)
This system protects us from getting sick. White blood cells fight off viruses and bacteria. The skin, lymph nodes, and spleen help too.

10. Reproductive System (Making Babies)
This system allows humans to have children. It is different for boys and girls. It does not fully develop until puberty.

Each system has a special job, but they all work together to keep us alive and healthy. Our body is amazing!
