Project-based learning with AI tools can effectively support K-12 teachers in integrating AI literacy across diverse subjects, regardless of their prior AI experience or students' economic backgrounds.
Objective: To explore how K-12 teachers integrate a Project-Based Learning (PBL) AI toolkit into diverse subject areas and examine their AI literacy levels, teaching approaches, and adaptation of AI tools.
Methods:
- Interviewed 13 middle and high school teachers from North America and East Asia
- Teachers watched a 5-minute demo video of the PBL AI toolkit
- Conducted 50-minute interviews covering AI literacy, teaching experiences, toolkit features, and course design
- Analyzed interview transcripts using thematic coding
Key Findings:
- 38% of teachers had strong understanding of AI4K12 framework
- 69% were confident in understanding AI capabilities and limitations
- AI Chatbot was the most widely adopted tool (64.3% usage)
- Teacher AI literacy levels did not correlate with student economic backgrounds
- Teachers appreciated the toolkit's ability to foster creativity and critical thinking
- Major concerns included content accuracy, trustworthiness, and ethical implications
Implications:
- The toolkit helps democratize AI education across economic backgrounds
- Project-based learning approach makes AI education more accessible
- Teachers can integrate AI literacy regardless of their technical expertise
- Provides scalable solution for incorporating AI across diverse subjects
Limitations:
- Small sample size
- Limited demographic diversity
- Focus on teacher perspectives only
- Limited assessment of actual classroom implementation
Future Directions:
- Broaden demographic sampling for more comprehensive understanding
- Improve teacher training and support
- Address ethical concerns and content accuracy
- Make toolkit more scalable for diverse educational settings
- Develop better assessment methods for AI literacy
